The Canadian Stone Carving Festival was held once again in Montreal this year (18-20th July 2025). What a wonderful festival for both the carvers that participate and the public who gets to see stone carving in action. As a letter carver it is exciting to be able to share my passion for letter carving. It is a slow, purposeful and meditative process all in one. As a society we are so used to having items that are made by machine that we sometimes forget the time and effort it takes to create something unique and the liveliness that only the maker’s hand can provide.
This festival allows the public to see creations come to life from blocks of limestone or a blank slate and ultimately be auctioned on the last day. There is always a flurry of anticipation and excitement on Sunday as the deadline for completion nears and then the delight when our pieces are sold, knowing that we are going to help a worthy charity.
It is a privilege to be able to participate each year and though I certainly don’t want to wish the year away I do look forward to the next festival in 2026!
